If you’ve achieved a stable career with steady work, but find yourself at an impasse where growth is concerned, it might be time to look into hiring a public relations professional to help you expand your brand and reach.

My Story: Why The Right Rep Really Makes a Difference

After a few years in the industry and continual bookings, I was happy — but I also felt stuck. I had plenty of work between studio scenes and live cam shows, but my work was not getting the notice or buzz that I wanted. I wasn’t in need of a rebrand or anything drastic, but my reach needed a boost. That’s when I decided it was time to invest in PR.

I was already acquainted with industry journalist Peter Warren, and he generously provided me with a list of names. From there, I narrowed down the list. I wanted someone who could go beyond the cookie-cutter or copy-paste template and take a really personalized approach. For a time, I was actually paying two reps to see which one I preferred, but in the end I chose to work with Michael Whiteacre at Honeyhouse PR — and I couldn’t be happier.

First off: he listens! He understands my brand and my goals — and he also excels at seeing the bigger picture and potential. He goes out of his way to find interesting opportunities, even in the mainstream. Besides requests from journalists for articles, he’ll get me on podcasts, radio shows and other really cool platforms that I would not otherwise have on my own.

If that sounds like a lot, don’t panic. Opportunity doesn’t mean “obligation.” When you work with a rep, you are always free to decline anything you don’t want to do. However, sometimes a rep’s outside perspective and encouragement can be just what you need to hone your confidence and take a leap.

As I noted earlier, a good rep does much more than crisis management. That being said, crisis management is still something to consider. This is especially true in the age of social media, when the slightest off-the-cuff remark can generate a world of backlash.

PR reps can help keep their clients grounded and focused, and they can definitely go a long way when it comes to mediating any brewing or potential drama. In fact, if you need to vent about any industry-related issue, your rep is generally a safe person to vent to, and they can often help you put situations into perspective.

Additionally, as your PR rep finds more opportunities for you, you may find journalists and/or corporate representatives trying to slide into your DMs or reach you directly. Your PR rep can help you vet those people, to make sure you don’t get pulled into any situation or agenda that you don’t want to be involved with. Good PR is also brand protection.

One of the most positive things your rep can help with is winning industry awards. If my goal is to be nominated in a particular category for this year, I tell my rep, I plan my work and then we make sure that work is getting buzz. It may sound simple, but trust me: trying to do it all alone is a massive undertaking that often fizzles out. A dedicated PR pro knows how to put everyone’s eyes on you. Take a look at some of the recent XMA award-winners and nominees, and you’ll see what I mean.

Speaking of buzz, your PR rep can help keep you informed about upcoming industry shows or other in-person events. They will be able to advise you on who might be in attendance that you should meet, and/or what parties or red carpets you should attend — or pass on. This can save you plenty of precious time and help you maintain sanity amid all the noise and chaos.

Finding the PR Rep Who Is Right For You

This is where it really pays to network with your fellow performers, and keep your eyes on more than just the competing spicy scenes in everyone’s feed. It never hurts to ask among colleagues and let it be known that you would like quality referrals — that approach worked for me.

In addition, many performers openly share who reps them in their social media bios, and sometimes reps are tagged in posts. You can also check out the XBIZ news section, as press releases often include relevant contact info for industry PR folks.

No matter how you find potential reps, only consult with vetted, established industry professionals. The adult industry is not immune to the same kinds of scams that plague mainstream talent, so vet, vet and always verify.

Additional Considerations

• Know your goals. Without any judgment or negative self-talk, take stock of where you are right now and ask yourself what you want. Sometimes it helps to plan a time frame: what’s your goal for 2025? What about in two years? Five years? Are you looking to pivot your brand into something different? Do you want to rise through the ranks in your existing niche or genre? What will it take to make that happen?
• Read your contract. I cannot stress this enough: Once you have vetted and selected a PR professional who seems like a good fit, take the time to actually read your contract. Make sure you understand the parameters of the rep’s work as well as what is expected from you. If you feel uncertain or struggle with reading legal contracts, have an industry-friendly lawyer look it over and give you feedback or answer questions.
• Understand the cost and what you are paying for. Be sure you are clear about your prospective rep’s commission rate and fee structure so you can work within your budget. Some reps charge a flat fee per month, but sometimes larger opportunities can cost extra.
• Ask about social media. Some PR reps provide social media management services or have connections to do so. If you are disinclined to spend time on social media or want to be more hands-off while you focus elsewhere, it’s totally understandable. I personally prefer to run my own social media accounts. Not only do I like to personally interact with fans and colleagues, I am also acutely aware that adult accounts can be easily banned for missteps, so I like to stay on top of what I put out there.
• Communicate regularly. It goes without saying that in order for a PR rep to do their job effectively, you need to show up and do yours. This means you need to keep the lines of communication open between you and your rep. For instance, if you have heavier shooting commitments this month, or you’re going to be in Vegas for half the month, be sure to let them know. If you’re concerned about any issues that could impact your reputation, tell your rep. If a journalist made you feel uncomfortable during an interview, tell your rep. Even the best reps are not psychic, so if you don’t speak up, you will not get the benefit of the advice and solutions you are paying them for.
